On January 31, I had the honor of presenting an American flag to the eldest of the newly naturalized citizens in Marion County, Indiana. This moment was emotional, in every sense. It was endearing, it was overwhelming and most of all, it was absolutely joyous. This man, after waiting for who knows how long, was finally an American citizen and I got to give him what was now HIS flag. This was a landmark moment in my life and gave me the opportunity to realize just how great this community is. In Indianapolis, we are able to enjoy the comfort of a small city while still being graced with a multicultural setting that allows for growth and enrichment.
On February 10, the Chinese and Taiwanese will be celebrating the Lunar New Year. According to the Zodiac, 2013 is the Year of the Snake. People born during the Year of the Snake enjoy lucky colors like red and yellow, lucky numbers of 2, 4, 7 and 9, and are compatible with people born in the Year of the Ox and Rooster.
On February 21, I’ll be visiting IUPUI’s International Festival, which annually showcases food, clothing, and companies that provide service around the globe. When you walk into the Campus Center, make sure you take a look at the flags that have been set up by The International Center! These flags represent the United Nations’ recognized nations, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe!
On February 13, The International Center is hosting a half-day workshop to teach communication, business etiquette, and protocol related to Chinese culture. This workshop is ideal for business representatives or people who anticipate a need to visit China or host Chinese visitors.
